English

Founded in 1985, the English Department boasts a contigent of high calibre faculty doing very well in both teaching and research. The devoted faculty consists of 8 professors, 11 associate professors, 2 lecturers and 3 foreign teachers. Students are able to practice and expand their knowledge through a wide range of extracurricular activities including debate contests, speech contests, short sketch contests and Model United Nations, which contribute to their future studies and careers. Language internship center gives students a glimpse into the job market and allows them to put what they have learned into practice. The English course balances a strong grounding in language skills and knowledge as well as the all-round development of the students. The course focuses on arts and humanities subjects and abilities: Chinese and Western cultures, European and American literature, translation studies and techniques, diplomatic and foreign affairs awareness, critical thinking and applying linguistic skills. Our students are proficient in at least two foreign languages and in computers thanks to our multidisciplinary approach.

The career options for an English graduate are extremely varied and they are qualified to work in various organizations and fields. Many have gone into the Civil Service, state-owned organizations, the finance sector including banking and securities, along with those now working in research and teaching institutes and non-governmental organizations.

The teaching concept is to combine basic language skills with professional knowledge, learn with independent thinking, study with practice as well as domestic education with international education. To be specific, the major attaches importance to training students basic English language skills without compromising professional knowledge such as literature, translation and humanistic knowledge including critical and independent thinking ability during the learning process. Students have opportunities to attend internationally-oriented activities at home and abroad.

The main courses are as follows：Introduction to Linguistics, English Pragmatics, English Modern and Contemporary Literature, American Modern and Contemporary Literature, Western Civilization,Classics of Western Philosophy, English and Chinese Translation, Basic Interpreting and International Relations.

The graduates are qualified to take jobs relating to English language, literature and culture in government, public institution, foreign-related enterprises and financial enterprises such as bank and security houses.

The major only enrolls art students whose second language is English. Candidates are required to take and pass the English oral test organized by the local Admission Office.

The major has been granted the right to confer bachelor and master degrees in arts.

Translation

Newly established in 2012, the Translation program aims to cultivate future translators with rich knowledge in Chinese and western cultures and natural science. Students’ Chinese language proficiency will also be developed besides English listening, English speaking, English reading and English writing. A wide selection of courses help students lay a solid foundation for the background knowledge: English and American Literature, Western Civilization, Western Classic Thinking, Cross-cultural Communication, Globalization, Diplomacy, Computer Science, Chemistry and Biology, etc. Translation practice and theoretical courses include Chinese Culture Translation, Chinese Classics Translation, Western Sinology as well as practical ones such as Science and Technology Translation, Business and Trade Translation etc. Trough rigorous training and practice, students’ translation ability is greatly improved and they are ready to work as highly qualified translators.

Core compulsory courses: Translation History, Translation Studies, News Translation, Chinese to English Translation, English to Chinese Translation, Basic Interpreting, Business Interpreting, Diplomatic Interpreting, Western Civilization and Classics of Western Philosophy.

Graduates find jobs in different sectors and industries such as foreign affair related sections in the government, state-owned companies, foreign enterprises, financial enterprises and schools. They are qualified enough to work as interpreters, translators and cultural communicators in fields such as foreign affairs, science and technology, commerce, finance, management, etc.

Candidates should hold a Bachelor degree in arts and they are supposed to take English as their first language. Candidates should take and pass the English oral test organized by the local admission office.

Japanese Major

The Japanese major was founded in 2001. Now it has 23 full-time teachers, 7 Japanese teachers and over 1/3 of the faculty have received doctorates from prestigious Japanese universities. The major fields are Japanese language and literature, translation, economy and trade.

The teaching philosophy of this major is to cultivate students that have a good command of Japanese language skills, intercultural communication competence that constantly improves with the times, appropriate grasp of science and engineering knowledge and self-innovation. Following such philosophy, the major aims to produce cross-disciplinary Japanese language talents who are equipped with both art and science knowledge, adept at thinking, and have basic research capabilities. Actively promoting international cooperation, the Japanese major has formed long-term cooperative relationships with 9 Japanese universities, including Yokohama National University, Ochanomizu University, the University of Kitakyushu, Josai International University and Kanazawa Gakuin University. It has also established long-term collaboration with government agencies such as Dalian Foreign Affairs Office and China Council for the Promotion of International Trade (Dalian),and Japan-funded enterprises in Dalian. All of these partners will provide translation-related internships for students.

The main courses are as follows: Basic Japanese, Advanced Japanese, Simultaneous Interpreting, Translation Theories and Practices, Cross-cultural Communication, Business Writing in Japanese, Introduction to Japan, Classical Japanese Literature, Modern and Contemporary Japanese Literature, and Introduction to Japanese Linguistics.

The graduates can choose to work in the fields of management, secretary, education, foreign affairs and trade in government, public institutions, foreign-related IT enterprises and financial institutions such as banks.

Russian

Founded in 2013, the Russian major adheres to the philosophy of cultivating students with a solid foundation of knowledge, focusing on practices, enhancing students’ abilities and highlighting the major’s distinguishing features. With the goal of producing interdisciplinary talents who have a firm grasp of the Russian language and culture, a sound knowledge structure, profound understanding of liberal arts, and a strong sense of innovation and excellent abilities, the major aims to cultivate students with a lofty character, a strong sense of responsibility, extensive common knowledge, outstanding capability, excellent comprehensive quality and a wide international vision. In addition to the language skills and knowledge of the specialty, students are encouraged to learn other disciplines and become competent people with diverse abilities. While carrying forward the traditions of Russian teaching, the major also participates in the national strategy of improving the soft power of China and enhancing its internationalization. A new field of study--Cultural Diplomacy has been initiated to provide a platform of teaching and learning for talents who have a perfect command of the conditions of Russian-speaking countries and would like to devote themselves to foreign affairs, international relations and cultural diplomacy.

The major now has 7 full-time teachers and 2 foreign teachers. It has 6 professors and associate professors, and 4 part-time professors. Of all the teachers, four have gained doctorates.

Based on the university’s teaching advantages that give priority to science and engineering, the major sets a comprehensive teaching concept with the help of multiple disciplines such as science, engineering, economics, management, liberal arts, law and philosophy. It highlights its competitive edge through years of scientific and technical Russian translation and enhances the development of the teaching model “Russian language + science and engineering disciplines”. Meanwhile, it regularly organizes academic exchanges with universities in Russia, Belarus and Ukraine.

Russian Grammar, Russian Listening, Viewing and Speaking, Introduction to Russia, Russian Reading (Life and society, Language and national conditions, Science, technology and economics), Advanced Russian Reading (Hot spots of society, Cultural diplomacy and International relations), Introduction to Russian Linguistics, Practical Russian Rhetoric, Russian Literature, Russian Writing, Russian Society and Culture, Practices of Russian Public Speaking, Russian Regional Studies, Cultural Diplomacy and China-Russia Relations, Russian Translation and Interpreting Workshops, Scientific Russian Translation, Business Russian Translation, Audio-Visual Course on Russian Culture, Guidance to Russian Paper Writing,and Second Language (English).

The graduates are qualified to take jobs related to Russian language and culture in the fields of government, foreign-related enterprises, education, economy, trade, culture, science, technology and military.
